What actually is a Kidney Stone?

Kidney stones are a common health problem, affecting about 1 in 10 adults at some point in their lives. They are hard deposits that form in the kidneys. They can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball.

How do I know that I have a Kidney Stone?

There are a number of symptoms that point to a kidney stone. The most common symptom is severe pain in the side or back, below the ribs. The pain may extend to the groin or lower abdomen. Other symptoms are

  • Blood in the urine
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever and chills
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Frequent urination

It becomes important to consult a doctor if you feel like you have any of the above symptoms.

Types of Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are caused by a buildup of minerals and salts in the urine. These minerals can form crystals, which can grow into stones. The most common types of kidney stones are:

  • Calcium oxalate stones: These are the most common type of kidney stone. They form when calcium in the urine combines with oxalate, a naturally occurring substance found in certain foods. The resulting crystals can accumulate and develop into hard deposits, causing discomfort and pain.
  • Calcium phosphate stones: Calcium phosphate stones, like other kidney stones, develop in the kidneys when calcium combines with phosphate in the urine. These crystals can aggregate and form hard deposits, leading to the formation of stones.
  • Uric acid stones: Uric acid stones form when there is an excess of uric acid in the urine. These stones can be particularly painful and are often associated with conditions like gout, where elevated levels of uric acid in the blood can lead to its crystallization in the kidneys.
  • Struvite stones: Struvite stones are primarily composed of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate. Unlike other types of kidney stones, these are often associated with urinary tract infections. The presence of certain bacteria can lead to the production of ammonium, creating an alkaline environment conducive to struvite stone formation.

What causes Kidney Stones?

The causes for the formation of kidney stones are:

  • Family history of kidney stones
  • Dehydration
  • Diet high in salt, protein, and sugar
  • Obesity
  • Certain medical conditions, such as hyperparathyroidism and Crohn’s disease
  • Taking certain medications, such as diuretics and antacids

How do I prevent Kidney Stones?

The following tips are helpful to both those looking for prevention and those who are suffering from kidney stones:

  • Staying hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, helps prevent kidney stones from forming.
  • Following a healthy diet: Eating a healthy diet that is low in salt, protein, and sugar.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight: Lose weight if you are overweight or obese.
  • Get regular exercise: Exercise regularly to help maintain a healthy weight and reduce your risk of kidney stones.
  • Manage stress: Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as yoga, meditation, or spending time in nature.
